Quick answer (42 words): RN is Registered Nurse and RM is Registered Midwife — the two registrations most Indian nurses hold together as RN RM. GNM is General Nursing and Midwifery, ANM is Auxiliary Nurse Midwife, and P.B.B.Sc is Post Basic Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
The registrations
RN — Registered Nurse. Not a course. A registration granted by a state nurses and midwives council after you complete a recognised nursing qualification. It is what permits you to practise.
RM — Registered Midwife. The parallel registration covering midwifery practice, granted on the same basis.
RN RM. Most Indian nurses hold both and it is written as one credential. When a job advertisement or an admission notification asks for "RN RM registration", this is what it means — and it means the registration must be live, not merely once obtained.
The distinction that matters: a degree or diploma is what you studied; a registration is what lets you work. You can hold the first without the second if you have not registered or have let it lapse — and in that state you are not eligible for most posts or for post-graduate admission.
The courses
ANM — Auxiliary Nurse Midwife. A shorter certificate-level programme, oriented towards community and primary health care.
GNM — General Nursing and Midwifery. A three-year diploma, and the most common nursing qualification in India by volume. A GNM holder registers as RN RM and practises as a nurse.
B.Sc Nursing. A four-year degree entered after school, followed by a supervised internship period.
P.B.B.Sc — Post Basic Bachelor of Science in Nursing. A two-year degree for candidates who already hold GNM and a live registration. Also written PBBSc, PBSc, P.B.B.Sc (N) and Post Basic B.Sc Nursing — all the same course. Covered fully in our page on the P.B.B.Sc full form.
M.Sc Nursing. The two-year post-graduate degree, requiring a bachelor's degree and, commonly, a year of experience.
Ph.D Nursing. The doctoral qualification, for research and senior academic roles.
The bodies
INC — Indian Nursing Council. The statutory body for nursing education in India. It recognises programmes, and its recognition is course-specific — a college recognised for GNM is not automatically recognised for B.Sc Nursing.
SNC / State Nursing Council. The state-level council that maintains the register of nurses and midwives and grants the RN RM registration.
TNNMC — Tamil Nadu Nurses and Midwives Council. The state council for Tamil Nadu, and the body a nurse qualifying here registers with.
NAAC — National Assessment and Accreditation Council. Assesses and accredits higher-education institutions generally. Distinct from INC recognition, and not a substitute for it — an institution can hold one and not the other.
"SC" in community health nursing
Sub-Centre. In the public health system, the Sub-Centre is the most peripheral health facility and the first point of contact between the community and the health system, typically staffed by an ANM and covering a defined population.
This appears in the community health nursing syllabus as part of the primary health care structure, which is why it turns up as a search term. The tier above it is the PHC — Primary Health Centre, and above that the CHC — Community Health Centre.
Warning about this abbreviation: "SC" also means Scheduled Caste in the admission and reservation context, and both meanings appear in nursing documents. Read it from the sentence around it — in a syllabus or a community posting it is Sub-Centre; in an eligibility or reservation clause it is a category.
The admission vocabulary
NEET. The national entrance for medical courses. It is not the route to B.Sc Nursing — nursing admission in Tamil Nadu runs through its own process. Our page on whether NEET is required covers this in full, because it is the single most common misunderstanding in nursing admission.
Merit list / rank list. The ordered list of candidates from which seats are allotted.
Choice filling. The stage where you list colleges in order of preference.
Allotment. The assignment of a seat against your rank and choices.
Reporting. Physically joining the allotted college within the deadline.
Management quota / government quota. The two categories of seat in a self-financing college, charged at different fees.
The clinical vocabulary you will meet in year one
OPD — Outpatient Department. IPD — Inpatient Department. ICU — Intensive Care Unit. OT — Operation Theatre. CSSD — Central Sterile Services Department. NICU — Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. PICU — Paediatric Intensive Care Unit. ANC — Antenatal Care. PNC — Postnatal Care.
Nobody explains these on your first day in a posting. They are worth knowing before you arrive.
Nursing at JKKN
The Sresakthimayeil Institute of Nursing and Research is INC approved and registered with the TNNMC, and NAAC accredited — three of the abbreviations on this page, and the three worth checking for any college you are considering.
Courses offered: B.Sc Nursing (60 seats), Post Basic B.Sc Nursing (50 seats) and M.Sc Nursing (25 seats).
If a notification, prospectus or advertisement uses a term you cannot place, the admission office will tell you what it means. It is a better question than most people think it is — several eligibility failures start as a misread abbreviation.
Two abbreviations worth double-checking on your own documents
Your course name. Whatever your awarding university prints on the certificate is the version to use on every later application — post-graduate admission, council registration and overseas credential assessment are all string-matching exercises done by people, and a mismatch generates a query and a delay.
Your council registration number. Copy it digit by digit from the certificate every single time. A transposed digit is the single most common rejection in post-graduate nursing applications, and it is treated as a mismatch rather than a typo.
FAQ
What is the full form of RN RM?
Registered Nurse and Registered Midwife — two registrations granted by a state nurses and midwives council, usually held together. They permit practice; they are not courses.
What does SC mean in community health nursing?
Sub-Centre — the most peripheral facility in the public health system and the first contact point between a community and the health services. In an eligibility or reservation clause, the same letters mean Scheduled Caste.
What is the difference between GNM and B.Sc Nursing?
GNM is a three-year diploma; B.Sc Nursing is a four-year degree followed by an internship period. Both lead to RN RM registration, but only the degree opens post-graduate nursing study directly.
What does P.B.B.Sc Nursing stand for?
Post Basic Bachelor of Science in Nursing — a two-year degree for candidates who already hold a GNM diploma and a live council registration.
Is INC approval the same as NAAC accreditation?
No. INC recognition covers the nursing programme and is course-specific; NAAC accredits the institution generally. An institution can hold one without the other, and for nursing the INC recognition is the one that decides whether your degree registers.
Is NEET the entrance for B.Sc Nursing?
No. NEET is the national entrance for medical courses. Nursing admission in Tamil Nadu runs through its own state process, which is a separate application entirely.
